From the 1st October 2021 until the 31st March 2022, the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates unites the ideas of 192 countries in an area spanning 4.5 square kilometers. EXPO 2020 Dubai is the first world Expo to take place in the Middle East and it is expected to attract millions of visitors over the six-month period it is on. After a year of being postponed due to COVID, the Dubai EXPO 2020 is now well underway. We are incredibly proud to be showcased not once, but twice!
In 2018 during the General Assembly of the United Nations, one of our projects (Make Camp Minawao Green Again) was recognized as one of the top 25 projects delivering impact on several Sustainable Development Goals as defined by the UN. Because of this recognition the UN invited us to EXPO Dubai to speak about our project and present it to the world.
Since 2017, the world’s largest humanitarian aid agency the UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency) and Land Life Company, supported by the Dutch National Postcode Lottery, have joined forces to build a Green Refugee Camp in the Far North of Cameroon. Together with refugees and local communities, we have reforested more than 100 hectares of severely degraded land in and around Minawao Refugee Camp where 63,000 refugees live fleeing violence in neighboring Nigeria. This initiative is providing jobs, shade, health and food for hundreds of refugees and local families.
Additionally, Land Life is featured as a Global Innovator at The Good Place Pavilion in the Opportunity District of EXPO 2020.
Back in October, our Head of Business Development, Sander Keulen was invited to speak on behalf of Land Life Company and the project for the first theme week of the Expo. This focused on the role of climate and biodiversity. Here, he spoke about Land Life’s mission to restore 2 billion hectares of degraded land and discussed how we work together with partners to work towards this goal.
All best practices deal with real-world matters, such as exterminating hunger and dealing with the problems as a result of climate change by using approaches that can be turned into usable solutions in any part of the world. We are really happy to not only have seen significant results from this project but also to have been recognized for our work there.
This week of January marks “Global Goals Week,” where Expo 2020 Dubai brings together partners, activists and advocates from around the world to mobilize and accelerate momentum. The idea behind this is a shared commitment between 130+ partners across civil society, business, academia, and the UN system to accelerate action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is also an opportunity to speak out as one voice, share ideas and transformative solutions in the fight to recover better from global challenges. Land Life has been invited back again and will be present to discuss exactly this, again underlining how our work ties in with the SDGs.
The great thing about gathering so many businesses actively working to combat the climate crisis together is that it will hopefully help catalyze more and more action from big businesses and help us as a global community work successfully towards the SDGs. Sharing inspiring stories with other incredibly inspiring and innovative projects really is a pleasure.
