Delivering high-integrity Environmental Plantings ACCUs with biodiversity and First Nations outcomes embedded by design

The context

Iberdrola Australia recently announced its commercial entry into nature-based solutions and carbon removal through its joint venture subsidiary, Carbon2Nature Australia, to support Iberdrola’s group net-zero and biodiversity targets, as well as to give customers access to ACCUs with verified environmental integrity.

Carbon2Nature Australia – part of Iberdrola’s Carbon2Nature group headquartered in Spain with a portfolio of projects across Spain and Brazil, required a project that could combine credible carbon removal in Australia with:

high standards of integrity, transparency and durability;
measurable biodiversity and social outcomes;
strong governance and long-term land security; and
a structure capable of meeting corporate requirements around timing, risk and delivery.

The solution

Land Life, along with our implementation partner Cassinia Environmental, partnered with Carbon2Nature Australia to develop the Talia Restoration Project, a large-scale carbon removal and reforestation initiative on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula.

The project is designed to generate Environmental Plantings ACCUs while restoring Drooping Sheoak Grassy Woodland, one of Australia’s most threatened ecosystems.

End-to-End Implementation

Land Life led the project end-to-end, including:

site identification, assessment and due diligence;
science-led carbon modelling and FullCAM development;
restoration and planting design;
biodiversity baseline and long-term monitoring design;
early and ongoing engagement with Wirangu and Nauo Aboriginal Corporation;
support for cultural burning training through Firesticks Alliance;
registration with Accounting for Nature to support ecological benchmarking and biodiversity measurement; and
establishment of an in-perpetuity Heritage Agreement to permanently protect the restored landscape.

The result

Talia demonstrates how high-integrity Environmental Plantings projects can be designed to deliver more than carbon alone.

The project is expected to deliver approximately 137,200 ACCUs over a 25-year issuance period, while embedding biodiversity, First Nations engagement and long-term land protection into the project from the outset.

Key outcomes include:

restoration of a critically endangered ecological community;
Traditional Owner access to Country restored for the first time in more than 170 years;
support for cultural burning training and Traditional land management;
biodiversity measurement through Accounting for Nature; and
permanent legal protection of the restored landscape.
