How does our ex-ante carbon product differ from spot credits?
Spot carbon credits refers to verified ex-post credits that you buy on a year-on-year basis to match your carbon footprint. On the other hand, working with Land Life is about investing in the future. Land Life creates and sells the rights to carbon removal credits via reforestation projects (planting trees where trees once stood). These carbon removal credits can be used to offset future projected carbon emissions (ie. the residual emissions after you've reduced your carbon outputs as far as you can throughout your supply chain).
How does it work with registration and issuance of credits?
Land Life sends the details of your project to Verra upon completion of planting. Verra-certified independent auditors conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your reforestation project and validate the amount of carbon sequestration. Verra then issues your Verified Carbon Units (VCU) valid for a 40 year period. You choose when to retire these VCUs.
How does Land Life accurately project carbon sequestration?
In practical terms, our model facilitates the filtering of independently collected data from sources such as national forestry inventories. The plant parameter data we gather includes potential heights and widths of trees, their growth rates and wood density. This allows us to make project-specific analyses on species composition and densities. Additionally, we conduct Site Productivity Assessments in the field, meaning we take tree core samples from reference forests at different ages to see their carbon capture over time. These assessments amplify the precision of our carbon capture predictions, especially when we believe local conditions differ from the regional or national data and we want to validate them with nearby reference sites. We have conducted Site Productivity Assessments with our local teams in Australia, the Iberian peninsula and North America. We do these with the participation (and consent) of landowners, as well as local academic experts and universities.
