Bringing science into practice to combat climate change

As discussed by the BBC, using technology has become essential to reforesting our planet at scale. Planting trees, by using technologies such as the automated planting machine and data models, can make a large impact in restoring the planet’s ecosystems. It enables us to plant faster and more accurately than conventional methods. In a series of interviews, key members of our tech team explain their roles and show how data and technology help them innovate the reforestation value chain. Next up is Koen Kramer – our Head of Resilience Engineering.

You’re a professor! What did you focus on before joining Land Life Company?

A large part of my research work concentrated on understanding forest resilience. At Wageningen University, for many years, I worked on understanding forest dynamics and trying to model their development. Therefore, we had to come to the understanding of the socio-ecological system of forests: how do climate and people affect the forest? And the most important part: can we influence this?

Why did you join the Land Life Tech team?

I am really committed to mitigating climate change. Reforestation is an important way to make that happen, and science is necessary to do that in the best possible way. By joining Land Life, I can bring such knowledge to practice, not just make guidelines and recommendations for policy makers and forest managers.

If you look into the future – where would you see Land Life Company in 5 years' time?

In 5 years' time, society and companies worldwide will be committed to mitigating climate change. I hope, in the future, that reforestation will not only be seen as a carbon market, but include rewarding other services like biodiversity and providing water. Land Life Company brings the scientific knowledge and the operations to actually make an impact on nature.

Which of the tasks belonging to your role do you like best?

That really is: bringing science to practice. Taking care that we, as the TechTeam, provide sound figures on future carbon capture all over the world; help develop the design of where, which and how many trees to plant; contribute to efficient monitoring of tree growth and analyse all the data so that we can learn from it. You can still spend many years studying all of that, but the challenge is to do it now.

But the best is working in a small, interactive team with people who have really chosen to work here, and are really passionate to make big reforestation changes.

Finally, what is one fact about trees that gives you the best story at a birthday party?

It still is: trees eat air. In fact, trees are literally largely condensed air, with a little bit of dirt taken from the soil. That is something that people can not wrap their head around.
